CFO
Expansion Capital Group
Tim Mages joined Expansion Capital Group (“ECG”) in February 2016 as CFO. During 2020, Tim transitioned to ECG’s Chief Strategy Officer where he is responsible for capital markets, new business development, legal / compliance, and government affairs. Prior to ECG, Tim worked as an investment banker covering the specialty finance industry for approximately 7 years and spent 5 years with Small Business Investment Companies (“SBIC”) providing debt capital to small businesses as part of the federal Small Business Administration (SBA) program. Tim’s investment banking career included positions at Wachovia Bank (now part of Wells Fargo), Royal Bank of Canada, and Stephens Inc. While working as an SBIC lender immediately after the 2008 / 2009 downturn, Tim witnessed first-hand how traditional sources of capital for small businesses were pushed by regulators to either move “up-market” or pursue funding with significant collateral requirements. ECG, like many other Fintech players, is filling this void that banks and debt funds rarely fill for the small businesses in this country. Headquartered in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Expansion Capital Group has provided approximately $600 million in working capital to small businesses throughout the United States since its founding in 2013. In 2017 and 2018, ECG was named one of the Fastest Growing Private Company in America by Inc. 5000 and in 2019 ECG was named one of the “Best Workplaces in Fintech” by Source Media.
